URGENT APPEAL: Bangladesh: Cyber attack against Bangladeshi human rights defender Jahangir Alam Akash [UA-BA-02-03-2011]
ISSUES: Right to personal property, right to intellectual property, right to privacy, safety of human rights defenders
Dear Friends, GHRD regrets to inform you about the cyber attack against Jahangir Alam Akash, Bangladeshi Journalist and Editor of Euro Bangla. The email account of Jahangir Alam Akash has been hacked by unknown perpetrators, who are also sending out false messages in his name asking all his national and international contacts for money.

The cyber attack took place on the 2nd March, 2011, two days after his publication of the article “Open challenge to Bangladesh government” http://www.eurobangla.org/?p=1673. The article discusses his torture at the hands of Bangladeshi government authorities and the publication of his new book Pain, which deals with issues of human rights, the rule of law, torture and extra-judicial killings and the persecution of minorities in Bangladesh.

The false message claims that Akash is in the UK on a programme, where he lost his wallet, money and cell phone, and that he requires 1,250 GBP in order to pay his hotel bill and leave the country. The message further states: “I’ve been to the embassy and Police, but they are not responding to the matter effectively, I will appreciate whatever you can afford to assist me with, I will return the money back to you as soon as i return, let me know if you can be of any help? ASAP. I don’t have a phone where I can be reached. I am so confused right now.”

Jahangir Alam Akash has been an outspoken human rights activist, disclosing the human rights violations perpetrated by the RAB in Bangladesh for which he was brutally tortured in 2007. He has lived in exile in fear of retaliation ever since. However, Akash has never been in the United Kingdom in his entire life.

It is particularily worrying that the perpetrators have obtained sensitive and private information about Mr Akash and his whereabouts.

The motivation behind the attack may be to extract sensitive information as well as to undermine his reputation.

The hackers are currently controlling his account: jaa.akash@yahoo.de and in addition they created a new email account: jaa.akashl@yahoo.de from which they are sending the messages. All communications to these email addresses are discouraged.
Jahangir Alam Akash can be reached at : editor.eurobangla@yahoo.de

The Human Rights Today Report: Face book (FB) as banned in Bangladesh. After Pakistan Bangladesh Government has taken same way. It is an attacked on the freedom of speech and freedom of thinking.
According to the bloggers, from today (29 May, 2010) no one can open Face Book account in Bangladesh. BTRC has blocked FB today. Before that, Hasina Government has shut down the private TV channel One on 27 April, 2010.
Recently some unethical pictures of Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina has uploaded in the face book by someone. The concern people are seems that, for this reason the FB has blocked by the government. We oppose all kinds of bad or immoral activity in the social media. But that means is not the right way to banned a powerful social media. All the users are not guilty for uploading nude things. We think this decision is against the freedom of speech. Those who are responsible for providing nude picture they should punish. Government can identify them. Already one people has been arrested in this connection. So why the government did it? Who are the advisers of this government? We believe those were giving this type of advice actually they wouldn’t want good for this government.
On the other hand, still there is violating human rights. Even the so called crossfire (Extra judicial killings) going on. Though, the present Prime Minister has promised to stop it as their election manifesto. Just after coming to power they have given their commitment again and again. But now they have taken inside of the extra judicial killings. Total five journalists have been killed under the present government. Many minority (Hindu, Indigenous) people have been killed, raped, and evicted by the ruling party members. If you could visit to http://youtube.com/user/jaakashbd & https://jaakash.wordpress.com/ then you find many human rights violation (article and video) under the present Awami government regime. At least 80 BDRmen have been killed in torture in the custody after so-called mutiny.
Bangladesh national human rights commission is the still a backboneless organisation. Many young women have compelled to suicide after eve teasing. Other human rights violation is continue as we saw in the past regime (Both BNP-Jammat and Caretaker government). The trial of war criminals could be finish by this government, we couldn’t believe yet. Every where ruling party people are dominating inside of the administration that we have seen during BNP-Jammat period. The local government has been paralysed by this government. After all, every where has been establishing MPi’sm.
Here is mention that, before it the government has blocked You tube also in March, 2009.

By Jahangir Alam Akash, The human Rights Today dot Info was a website on press freedom, freedom of speech, minority and indigenous rights, human rights and for the peoples who have oppressed and who have no voice. But, from today that popular website has died; it was killed by the so-called website provider. Why our website has killed please follow and read the bellow’s article.
The present global age is a digital one. Bangladesh, as a Third World developing country, is not yet up to speed digitally. In Bangladesh, there are no policies for internet business or the internet sector. There are also no cyber laws, which has allowed a lot of crimes to be committed. Internet customers are being harassed by providers. Not only that, but customers are losing their money.

The web hosting sector is especially corrupt. Internet service providers (ISPs) often commit forgery with customers, and the government has no control over the ISP providers. For this reason, the average person is suffering, while providers have been getting money from customers in the name of offering web domain names, hosting, design and registration.

The present government of Bangladesh has declared that they will create a digital Bangladesh. But, the IT sector hasn’t been unified under a policy. Because of this, most IT customers are being cheated by the providers.

In Bangladesh, domain and web providers have sprouted up everywhere, but they have no moral or social obligations. They only want to make money within a short time, so they are cutting the throats of the customers and making huge amounts of money. Some providers don’t give the website controls to the customer, and so have cheated the average customer.

A website owner told to Human Rights Today that he started a website on media and human rights in Bangladesh in 2008, but the provider still hasn’t given him the controls, even though he wanted to have control from the beginning. He mentioned that the provider has hacked into his site in the name of a hacker at least two times.

In light of this situation, he communicated again with the provider to get control of his website. And now is the time for the annual registration renewal. The provider charged around 20,000 Taka for the domain name and hosting registration for the next year. But the provider still didn’t provide control to the website owner.
Mr. William Gomes, a renowned human rights activist and the executive director of the Christian Development Alternative (CDA), told Human Rights Today, “We need a good policy for ISP providers. Otherwise, the problem won’t end.”

We think that the Bangladesh government should immediately form a policy for ISP providers, so that they are accountable to the customer. The government should take action to remove all kinds of irregularities concerning ISP providers, for the digital Bangladesh.

Victimized by cyber crime!!!

On Nov. 25, 2009, the secular and free website Humanrightstoday.info was hacked. It was a web news portal about human rights, press freedom, minority oppression, peace, democracy and advocacy for those people who have no voice, specifically in Bangladesh.

The website was operated from Bangladesh by me. I was brutally tortured by the elite force RAB, because I disclosed the inhuman atrocities committed by the RAB in Bangladesh. Because of my profession, I have made an enemy of Islamic militant groups, a few corrupt politicians and a few influential members of the administration.

After my torture, I started the Humanrightstoday.info website. Then I went to Germany, and I continued to operate my site from Germany. The site had been gaining in popularity. It was the only site that published the actual facts and figures regarding human rights, press freedom and minority oppression in Bangladesh. However, I do not have the economic means to continue operating the site, so now I have started my own blog (https://jaakash.wordpress.com).

I am a professional journalist, writer and human rights defender based in Bangladesh. I was the editor of Humanrightstoday.info. I have worked with Radio German-DW; Ekushey TV; CSB News; the oldest Bengali newspaper in Bangladesh, the Daily Sangbad; Dainik Bangla; Ajker Kagoj; the New Nation; the Morning Sun; APB; etc.

I have also worked as a regional coordinator for the Bangladesh Rehabilitation Center for Trauma Victims (BRCT). I was the general secretary of the Rajshahi Union of Journalists, Rajshahi University Press Club, and an executive member of the Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ). I have also been involved with cultural organizations. I was the publicity secretary of the historical cultural organization of Bangladesh Udichi Shilpi Goshthi, Rajshahi district unit.

Every day around the world, cyber crime is happening, yet the perpetrators of cyber crime are escaping punishment, even though the big and rich countries have good laws against cyber crime.
